Preparing Your Property For Stinging Insects This Summer.

Stinging insects like bees, wasps, and hornets can do a lot of good: Namely, they are the primary pollinators on the planet. They also can dish out some pretty nasty stings, build home damaging nests, and- depending on the type of stinging insect- can be very aggressive. Keeping stinging insects away from your home is no simple feat, but there are a few things that you can do to make your property less appealing.

  1. Seal Cracks and Crevices

If you are worried about stinging insects nesting in your home, the simplest step that you can take is to inspect the exterior of your home, identify any cracks, crevices, gaps, or holes, and seal those up and block them off. If you can block their entryway, stinging insects will have a much harder time getting into your home – which will make it a less appealing place for them to build a nest.

  2. Cover Food, Drink, and Trash

One thing that will bring stinging insects swarming is access to food and sweet beverages – your trash is their treasure. To make your property less appealing to these insects, keep a tight lid on outdoor trash, and dispose of or cover up any foods that might be appealing to them during the family barbecue.

  3. Maintain Your Yard

Remember: not all stinging insects build their nests in the air. There are a number of different wasps known as “ground wasps”, and they will build their nest in holes left behind by other critters. Carefully maintaining your yard and filling in any holes dug by animals will make your yard a more difficult place to nest in, which should help keep stinging insects away – at least when it comes to ground wasps.

  4. Know Your Garden

It is pretty common knowledge that if there’s one thing that will definitely attract stinging insects, it’s flowers. Does that mean that you have to abandon your dream flower garden? Of course not! What it does mean is that if you do have a flower garden- or are planning to plant one- try to place it somewhere away from your home. That way you can keep your flower garden and avoid having a ton of stinging insects close to your home during pollination season.
